What the Lifetime Lead Call Count Limit does

The Lifetime Lead Call Count Limit sets the maximum number of times a single Lead can be dialed inside one Campaign, counting across the whole life of that record. Set it to 0 and there is no cap; set it to any other number and VICIdial stops dialing the lead once it reaches that count.

Unlike the daily and rolling limits, this one is a default feature. There is nothing to switch on in System Settings — the field is just sitting there waiting for a number.

Where to set it

Go to Modify Campaign -> Detail and find the field labeled Call Count Limit. Enter the total number of dials you want to allow per lead, then save. The default is 0, which means a record can be called as many times as it keeps cycling through the Hopper.

  • 0 = no limit; the lead can be dialed indefinitely while it stays in a dialable status.
  • Any positive number = the lead stops being dialed once its total call count hits that value.
  • The count is per campaign, so the same record loaded into two campaigns tracks its lifetime count separately in each.

How a lead crosses its lifetime limit

Every time the lead is dialed, its call count goes up by one. Once that count equals the limit you set, the next time it is selected, VICIdial skips it instead of placing the call.

  [*] --> Fresh
  Fresh --> Dialing: selected from hopper
  Dialing --> Counted: call placed, count plus one
  Counted --> Dialing: below limit, dialed again
  Counted --> AtLimit: count equals limit
  AtLimit --> Skipped: selected again
  Skipped --> Retired: stays capped

A lead may go slightly over the limit when Lead Recycling or Auto-Alt-Dialing is enabled. Those features can re-queue a record inside the same dial pass, so treat the limit as a near-cap rather than an exact ceiling when they are on.

When to use it

Use the Lifetime limit when you want to retire a record after a fixed number of attempts no matter how long the campaign runs. It is the simplest way to stop chasing dead numbers forever and to keep your list from re-dialing the same unanswered leads for weeks. It does not look at the clock at all — only the running total, so a record that took ten days to reach its cap and one that reached it in an hour are treated exactly the same.

A common pattern is to pair a Lifetime limit with a Dial method that keeps cycling fresh leads to the front of the Hopper. As older records hit their cap and drop out, the dialer naturally shifts its effort toward numbers that still have attempts left, instead of grinding away on records that will never answer. That keeps your contact rate healthier over the life of a campaign without any manual list pruning.

Pick the number based on how many tries a typical record deserves before you give up. Many teams land somewhere between three and seven for cold lists, then set it higher for warmer data where a few extra attempts are worth the cost. Because the field is per campaign, you can run an aggressive cap on one campaign and a patient one on another using the very same data.

If you instead need a per-day reset, that is a different control; see how to set a Daily Call Count Limit. For the bigger picture of every per-number control, read the phone-based functions guide. And remember the Lifetime limit is about attempt fatigue, not legal compliance — your DNC (do not call) and TCPA rules still apply.
