What Answering Machine Detection is and what it does for your campaign
AMD listens to the first seconds of an answered call and decides human vs machine, so agents spend their time on live people instead of voicemail.
Answering Machine Detection (AMD) listens to the first few seconds of an answered outbound call and decides whether a live person or a machine picked up. The goal is simple: send your Agent pool more Live answer calls and quietly handle the voicemail.
What AMD actually does on a call
When a call is answered, the dialer briefly holds it and analyzes the audio before connecting anyone. If it hears a human, the call goes straight to an available agent. If it hears an answering machine, the call is diverted: VICIdial can hang up, or it can play a recorded message and end the call. Either way, the agent never sits through the beep.
Under the hood, VICIdial's AMD (answering machine detection) runs through a dedicated dial extension that analyzes the answer before it ever reaches a person. That analysis is what separates a campaign that burns agent minutes on voicemail from one that doesn't.

On lists where a lot of dials land on voicemail, the benefit is real:
- Agents spend their talk time on people who can actually buy or book, not on dead air and beeps.
- Machine answers get their own Disposition, so you can measure how much of your list is voicemail and tune your dialing around it.
- You can drop a recorded prompt on detected machines instead of hanging up, which is a controlled form of Voicemail drop.
The cost — be honest about it
AMD is not free. Every answered call gets analyzed, including the human ones, so AMD adds a short processing delay to every connection your agents take — not just the voicemail ones. A real person who answers and waits a beat before the agent speaks is the price of that analysis. On a busy campaign those beats add up across thousands of calls a day, and they nudge your dialer pacing a little slower than it would otherwise run.
Because it analyzes everything, AMD needs tuning to your lead quality and your telecom lines. For a lot of campaigns the cheaper fix is a longer Dial timeout — set it to 22 to 26 seconds and most voicemails pick up after the call has already timed out, so you sidestep the whole AMD cost. We cover that call in when to turn AMD on and when to leave it off.

Tuning AMD well starts with a server you actually control. VICIfast gives you a dedicated VICIdial box, provisioned in under 40 seconds, where you can set the AMD extension and the dial timeout yourself. See plans and pricing.
