AMD (Answering Machine Detection)

Asterisk feature that detects when a call hits voicemail vs a live human.

Answering Machine Detection (AMD) is Asterisk logic that listens to the first 1-3 seconds of an answered call and decides "human" or "machine". VICIdial uses AMD to drop voicemail-bound calls before connecting an agent.

Settings live on the campaign:

  • AMD Send to VMX = Y to drop machines, N to connect anyway
  • Allowed Answering Machine Lag — how long to listen before deciding (lower = faster transfer to agent, but more false positives)

AMD is imperfect — false positives mean hanging up on real humans. Tune carefully. The TCPA drop-rate cap counts AMD-hung-up live humans as drops.
