What the five Modify Leads permission settings do

The Modify Leads permission is not a simple on-off switch. Its five settings range from full edit to read-only. Here is what each value means.

What the five Modify Leads permission settings do

Most VICIdial permissions are a plain on or off. The Modify Leads setting is different. It takes five different values, and each one grants a slightly different slice of editing power on the admin lead search results page. Getting the number wrong means a manager can either change too much or nothing at all. A Lead is a single customer contact record, and the lead search results page is where admins find and edit those records one at a time.

Full edit versus protected fields

A setting of 1 or 3 lets the user modify leads on the admin lead search results page with no field restrictions, which includes changing the phone number and the alt number. A setting of 2 or 4 lets the user modify all lead fields except the phone number and alt number fields. That protected-field rule is the main reason to choose an even value: you let someone fix a name or address without letting them rewrite the dialed number.

Editing call log statuses

The 3 and 4 values add one extra power on top of editing fields: they let the user modify the log statuses of the logs shown in the modify lead admin screen. A log Status (lead status) is the outcome code attached to a past call attempt. So a 3 gives full field edit plus log-status edit, while a 4 gives field edit minus the phone fields, plus log-status edit. If you never want history rewritten, stay on 1 or 2.

Read-only mode

A setting of 5 is read-only mode. The user can open and view leads but cannot save any changes and cannot add new leads. This is the right choice for a quality-assurance reviewer or an auditor who needs to look at a Lead tied to a Campaign without any risk of altering it. It is stronger than leaving the permission off, because the user keeps view access while losing every write path.

Picking a value

Match the number to the role. Data correctors who must fix bad numbers get 1. Front-line supervisors who tidy names but should never touch the dialed number get 2. Add log-status editing only when someone genuinely needs to reclassify call history, since rewriting outcomes can quietly skew your reporting if it is handed out too widely. Lean on 5 for anyone who only needs to look, such as a trainer or an auditor. Tie the choice to each User group so the same person sees the same power everywhere they work, rather than having one level in one team and a different level in another. That consistency is what stops a permission from becoming a surprise later.
