Manual dialing in VICIdial: when to use it

Manual dialing is the slowest mode VICIdial offers, and sometimes that's exactly what you want. Agents click to dial every number, nothing fires automatically, and you trade speed for control. Here's when that trade is worth it.

It's tempting to assume the goal is always to dial faster. But VICIdial includes a MANUAL dial method for a reason, and for some kinds of calling it's not a fallback, it's the right answer. In manual mode the dial level locks at 0, nothing is placed automatically, and an agent clicks to dial every single number. You give up speed and you get back control. The question is when that's a good deal.

What manual dialing actually does

Set the Dial Method to MANUAL and the dial level is forced to 0 and locked there. The predictive engine is off. There's no pacing math, no lines fired ahead of agents, no risk of a dropped call because there's never a call placed without a person ready to take it. Every dial is a deliberate human action. This is plain manual dialing, and it's about as far from a predictive dialer as VICIdial gets.

Because the pacing fields are inert in this mode, the drop percentage limit, the maximum adapt dial level, and the intensity controls all sit idle. There's nothing for them to govern. That's worth knowing if you're copying settings from another campaign: those numbers come along for the ride but don't do anything until you switch to a method that actually places calls automatically.

When it's the right call

A few situations where manual earns its keep:

  1. Compliance-sensitive lists. Where regulations push you toward a human pressing a key for each call, manual sidesteps the auto-dialer question entirely. Pair it with disciplined dnc handling and you stay on the safe side.
  2. Cellphones. Calling mobile numbers often carries stricter rules under the tcpa, and manual dialing is a common way to keep that traffic clean.
  3. High-value, low-volume leads. If each contact is worth a lot and you have only a handful per day, the speed of predictive buys you nothing. Manual lets agents prepare for each call.
  4. Tiny teams. With one or two agents predictive has no crowd to average over, so the simplicity of clicking to dial often wins.

The common thread is that manual trades throughput for certainty. You'll dial far fewer numbers per hour, but every one of them is a deliberate choice, which is easy to explain to a compliance team and easy to defend later. For a lot of work that certainty is worth more than the extra connections a predictive dialer would have made.

The blended cousin

Don't confuse MANUAL with INBOUND_MAN. The latter lets an agent place manual calls from a campaign list while still catching inbound calls from an ingroup in between. With INBOUND_MAN you set the dial level to 1.0 so inbound calls reach agents, but even then no auto-dial calls are placed. It's the option for an agent who needs to do a little outbound between answering the phone.

If your volume grows and manual starts feeling like a bottleneck, the dialing strategies guide shows the path up to ratio and predictive, and this piece on drop rates explains the risk you take on when you leave manual behind. Need a hosted dialer that's ready for either approach? See our pricing.

Frequently asked

Does manual dialing place any calls automatically?
No. With the MANUAL method the dial level locks at 0 and agents click to dial each number themselves. Nothing fires on its own, which is the whole point.
How is MANUAL different from INBOUND_MAN?
MANUAL is pure outbound clicking. INBOUND_MAN lets an agent place manual calls from a list while also catching inbound calls in between, so it's a blended option rather than a strictly outbound one.
