Agent Select Territories explained

Agent Select Territories lets a logged-in agent pick which regions they dial, instead of you locking them to one. Here is what it does, the two settings it depends on, and when it actually helps.

Agent Select Territories explained

Most of the time you decide which leads an agent works. But sometimes the agent knows the territory better than the schedule does — a bilingual rep who should take the Texas list, or someone who covers two states on alternating days. Agent Select Territories is the campaign option that hands that choice to the agent at login instead of pinning them to one region from your side.

What the setting actually does

When this is on and the agent belongs to at least one territory, they see a list of available territories the moment they log in. They check the ones they want to dial, and the dialer only feeds them leads from those regions. If they need to change later, they go on pause, return to the territory list, adjust their picks, and come back to ready. So it is not a one-time choice at login — it follows the agent through their shift.

Behind the scenes this rides on top of owner-based dialing. A territory is really a label on the lead's owner field, so the dialer is still matching the Lead to the Agent — it is just letting the agent steer which slice of the Lead list they get.

The two switches it depends on

This is the part people miss. Agent Select Territories does nothing on its own — it needs two other settings in place first:

  • Owner Only Dialing on the campaign must be set to TERRITORY. This tells the dialer to match leads by territory ownership rather than by individual user or user group.
  • User Territories must be enabled in System Settings, the system-wide switch that turns the whole territory feature on.

On top of that, each agent has to actually be assigned to one or more territories in their user record. An agent with no territory sees no picker. Because owner-only dialing pulls specific leads rather than whatever is next, this mode wants No Hopper Dialing turned on and the dial method set to manual or inbound-manual rather than full predictive. If you are used to running flat-out predictive, this is a different rhythm — worth reading the VICIdial dialing strategies guide so you know the trade-off going in.

When this earns its keep

Agent Select Territories is a good fit when your floor has overlap — agents who can cover more than one region, and you would rather let them decide than rebuild assignments every morning. A team that handles East-coast and West-coast lists at different times of day is the classic case: the agent flips territories as the clock moves, instead of you juggling the Campaign.

It is the wrong tool if you need tight control over who calls whom, or if your leads are not cleanly owned by territory. In those cases plain owner-only dialing or a straightforward routing setup is simpler. And remember this is a Manual dialing (click to dial) style pattern — it will not pace itself like predictive, so do not expect it to also chase your dials-per-hour numbers.

One last note: because manual-style dialing changes how calls connect, keep an eye on your connect quality after switching. If anything looks off, the steps in how to lower your VICIdial drop rate still apply. If you would rather skip the tuning entirely and have a clean dialer handed to you, take a look at our plans and pricing.

Frequently asked

Why is the territory picker not showing up for my agent?
Two things have to be true: Owner Only Dialing on the campaign must be set to TERRITORY, and User Territories must be turned on in System Settings. The agent also has to belong to at least one territory in their user record. Miss any of those and the picker stays hidden.
Can an agent change territories mid-shift?
Yes. They pick territories at login, and any time they go on pause they can return to the territory list and adjust the selection before going back to ready.
