First login to VICIdial Admin after install

The install is done and the box is up. Now you need to actually get into the admin interface and turn the keys, because a fresh VICIdial ships with a single default account and a setup screen that makes you choose a few system-wide defaults before it lets you in. This post walks that very first login, end to end, so you start from a secure admin account that can reach every page.

Signing in as 6666

Open a browser and go to the admin page on your server, using the IP or hostname your install was configured with. VICIdial sends you to a login screen; click Administration and enter the default credentials, login 6666 and password 1234. This 6666 account is the built-in super Agent user that comes with every install, sitting at user level 9 with the keys to the whole system.

One caution worth repeating: 6666 with password 1234 is public knowledge. Anyone who can reach your admin page knows it too, so the steps below that change the password are not optional housekeeping; they are the first thing standing between you and a hijacked dialer.

The Welcome screen

Right after logging in, VICIdial shows a Welcome screen with copyright, trademark, and license information, plus a link to the source code. There is nothing to configure here; read it and click Continue to Initial Setup. This screen only appears once, on the very first login, so it is your signal that the account has never been set up before.

Next comes the Initial Setup screen, which forces you to set a handful of system-wide defaults before it finishes logging you in. Take your time here, because these values become the suggested defaults every time you create something later. The fields are:

• New Password: replace the 1234 password for 6666 right now. Longer is better; there is a strength meter to guide you.
• Default Phone Registration Password: the Phone registration secret VICIdial will suggest each time you create a phone, used by the softphone or hardphone to register.
• Default Phone Login Password: the password suggested for each new phone's agent-screen login.
• Default Server Password: the password suggested each time you add a new server to the system.
• Default Local GMT: your server's local time as a GMT offset (lead), with no Daylight Savings adjustment by hand.
• Default Voicemail Zone: the timezone suggested for each new phone or voicemail box, which keeps timestamps accurate even if agents are elsewhere.

Enable every admin page on 6666

By default the 6666 account cannot see every admin page. Go to the Users list, click Modify next to 6666, and set all of the Admin Interface Options to 1 so each section is enabled. The one thing you must not change is the user level: leave it at 9. The level controls access to administration functions, and the interface options control which pages show, so you want both wide open. While you are on this screen, change the password again if you skipped or rushed it earlier.

Click Submit at the bottom so the changes take effect. After this, the 6666 user can edit just about anything in the interface, which is what you need before building your first User group, your first campaign, and your first phone with its Extension and dialplan number.
