Smart Carrier: what it is and how the pieces fit

Smart Carrier connects your own Telnyx account to VICIfast so the platform can buy numbers, answer calls with an AI agent, send texts and run follow-up — while you keep the carrier relationship and pay Telnyx directly.

Smart Carrier is the part of VICIfast that talks to a carrier on your behalf. You bring your own Telnyx account, connect it with an API key, and the platform can then buy and route numbers, answer calls with an AI agent, send and receive texts, and run automated follow-up after a call ends. This article is the map: what each piece does, the order to set them up in, and who is billed for what.

The thing that makes it different: it is your account

Most platforms resell you minutes. Smart Carrier does not. The Telnyx account is yours, the numbers are in your name, and Telnyx bills you directly for calls, texts and number rental. VICIfast never sits in the middle of that invoice.

That has two consequences worth knowing up front. The good one: you can see every cent in your own carrier console, move your numbers elsewhere whenever you like, and negotiate your own rates. The honest one: if your Telnyx balance runs out, calls stop — and they stop at the carrier, where we can report the failure but cannot fix it for you.

The pieces, in the order you set them up

  1. Connect the account. Read-only at first, so you can see your numbers and balance before granting anything. Then grant write access when you want VICIfast to actually configure things.
  2. Get a number. Buy one through VICIfast, or use one you already own on that account.
  3. Point the number somewhere. At an in-group on your dialer, so it rings your agents — or at an AI agent, so it is answered by software.
  4. Build an AI agent, if you want calls answered without a person. Start from a template, edit what it says, give it knowledge to draw on, and decide where it hands off to a human.
  5. Set up Journeys, so what happens after a call is automatic: a text an hour later, a voicemail drop the next morning, a callback booked in the dialer.
  6. Register for 10DLC before you send any volume of text. US carriers filter unregistered traffic, quietly.

Where each thing lives

  • Overview — the accounts themselves: connected or not, may we write to them, what the balance is, and whether anything is broken.
  • Phone Numbers — every number on the account and, in the widest column, what actually answers it.
  • AI Agents — the assistants, and the knowledge bases they draw on.
  • Call Analytics — how the AI calls went and what they cost.
  • Messages — the SMS inbox, threaded per contact.
  • 10DLC — brand and campaign registration for US texting.
  • Journeys — what happens to a lead after a call ends.

Who pays for what

  • Telnyx bills you for: minutes, texts, number rental, AI assistant usage, and 10DLC registration fees.
  • VICIfast bills you for: your server and the platform, exactly as it did before you connected a carrier.
  • Nothing in Smart Carrier adds a per-minute margin. The cost figures shown in Call Analytics are the carrier’s own, reported back on the call, not an estimate we calculate.
Connecting a carrier account does not change your VICIfast bill. It changes who you buy minutes from — and if you already had a SIP carrier on the dialer, you can keep it: Smart Carrier does not replace your existing trunks.

Common questions

Frequently asked

Do I have to use Telnyx?
For Smart Carrier, yes — it is the carrier the AI agents, messaging and journey calls run on. Your existing SIP carrier on the dialer is untouched and can keep carrying your outbound traffic alongside it.
Does connecting an account change anything immediately?
No. A newly connected account is read-only: we can see your numbers and balance and nothing else. Nothing is created on your account until you grant write access as a separate step.
What happens to my numbers if I disconnect?
They stay yours, on your Telnyx account, with whatever routing they had. Disconnecting removes our access, not your numbers.
Can I use one carrier account with more than one VICIfast server?
Yes. Numbers can point at any of your servers, and each server gets its own SIP connection and outbound trunk named after its hostname, so you can tell them apart in your carrier console and disable one without touching the others.
Who do I contact when a call fails?
Start with us. Most failures are visible from both sides here — the account diagnosis on the Overview page checks your carrier account and your dialer together, which is something neither console can do alone.
  • Connect your Telnyx account — the API key, the two access modes, and what we create.
  • Phone numbers — buying one, and pointing it at a queue or an agent.
  • AI Agents — templates, instructions, knowledge and handoff.
  • Journeys — automatic follow-up after a disposition.
