Messages: the SMS inbox

Texts you send and replies you get, threaded per contact. Delivery states that tell the truth about 10DLC filtering, and what happens when somebody opts out.

The Messages page is a threaded inbox for the numbers on your carrier account. One thread per contact, the transcript on one side, the composer on the other.

Delivery states, and why the distinction matters

Every message shows its own state, and Sent is drawn differently from Delivered on purpose. They are not the same thing:

  • Queued — accepted by us, not yet handed to the carrier.
  • Sent — the carrier accepted it. It has left, and that is all this means.
  • Delivered — the handset acknowledged it. This is the one that means the person could have read it.
  • Failed — it did not go, with the carrier’s reason attached.
  • Suppressed — not sent, because the recipient opted out.
The gap between Sent and Delivered is where 10DLC filtering lives. A US carrier can accept a message from unregistered traffic and then quietly drop it. An inbox that drew both as a tick would teach you to trust a message that never arrived, so this one does not.

Sending

Pick a thread and type, or start a new one with a number. Messages go out from a number on your account that has messaging enabled.

Opt-outs

A person who replies STOP is added to your suppression list for that account. Their thread’s composer is disabled rather than left to fail on send — the rule is the same either way, and finding out before typing is better than after.

The suppression applies everywhere, not just in the inbox: journeys will not text or call that person either.

Replies from Journeys

A text sent by a journey appears in the same inbox as one you typed, labelled with the journey that sent it. When the person replies, the journey reacts — usually by stopping so a human can take over — and you see the whole exchange in one thread.
