Lowering your per-minute carrier cost

Lowering your per-minute carrier cost is mostly about wasting fewer minutes and routing the ones you keep more cheaply. Since you pay your carrier directly, every minute you save is money straight back in your pocket.

This sits inside the broader picture in our pillar on what VICIdial really costs, where carrier minutes are the one variable line in the budget. That variability is exactly what makes it worth optimizing.

Where minutes leak

Your Carrier is the telco company that bills you per minute over a SIP trunk, the connection that carries calls between your dialer and the carrier. Minutes leak in three places: dialing dead numbers, dropping live calls before an agent picks up, and over-dialing relative to agent capacity. Plug those leaks before you go hunting for a cheaper rate, because a cleaner dial pattern saves more than a rate negotiation.

Cut your drop rate

Your Drop rate is the share of answered calls where no agent was ready, so the call gets hung up. Every dropped call cost you a connected minute and gave you nothing. Worse, high drops risk TCPA trouble, the federal telemarketing rules that cap abandoned calls. Tuning your Dial level, the multiplier of calls placed per available agent, down a notch trims drops and the wasted minutes that come with them. Our guide on how to lower VICIdial drop rate goes deeper.

Scrub the list before you dial it

Dead, disconnected, and duplicate numbers all cost a connection attempt. Cleaning your Lead list, the set of numbers loaded into the dialer, raises your Answer rate, the share of dials a person or machine picks up, which means fewer wasted attempts per contact. A scrubbed list is the cheapest minute-saver you have, because the minute you never dial costs nothing.

Use least cost routing

Least-cost routing sends each call out over the cheapest available Trunk for that destination. The Trunk is the carrier path your call rides. If you carry more than one carrier, route domestic to one and certain area codes to another based on per-minute rates. VICIdial supports multiple carriers, so you are not locked to a single rate card. Splitting traffic by destination shaves the bill without touching call quality.

The cheapest rate is worthless if call quality is bad. A carrier that drops audio forces redials, which spend more minutes than the rate you saved. Test quality before you chase the lowest number.

Shop carriers, but compare the real bill

Headline per-minute rates hide billing increments, DID (direct inward dialing) rental for your numbers, and surcharges. Compare a full month of expected traffic, not the rate alone. Our piece on choosing a SIP carrier covers what to put in that comparison. Because you bring your own Carrier, you can switch any time the math favors a move.

What we do and do not touch

We never mark up your minutes. You pay your carrier directly at their rate, and our flat per-server Managed hosting fee covers the box, patching, and backups, never your call usage. That separation means optimizing minutes is purely between you and your carrier, with nothing skimmed in the middle. For how our flat fee is structured, see our pricing page.

Fix the leaks, route smart, and shop the full bill. The savings compound every single dial.
