Manual Dial Hopper Check explained

Manual Dial Hopper Check stops the awkward double-call: an agent dials a number by hand just as the auto-dialer was about to dial the same one. Turn it on and VICIdial clears the queued copy first. Here's how it works and when to use it.

Manual Dial Hopper Check explained

Picture this: an agent pulls up a lead and dials it by hand, not realizing the auto-dialer had that exact number queued and ready to fire. A minute later, the same person gets a second call from your center. Embarrassing, and on the wrong day, a compliance problem. Manual Dial Hopper Check is the small setting that closes that gap, and it costs you almost nothing to turn on.

What it does

Set it to Y, and whenever an agent places a manual call from the agent screen, VICIdial first looks in the Hopper for a lead with the same phone number. If it finds one waiting in the queue, it deletes that queued copy before the manual call goes out. The result: the auto-dialer won't later dial a number the agent just handled by hand.

It's a quiet, one-direction safeguard: the manual call wins, and the duplicate in the auto-dial queue gets cleared out of the way. The default is N, so this is something you opt into deliberately rather than something that happens behind your back.

Who actually needs it

The setting only earns its keep when agents are doing both at once — placing calls with Manual dialing (click to dial) from the same lists the auto-dialer is also working. That's common on blended campaigns, and on teams where reps hand-dial promising leads or callbacks while the system keeps auto-dialing the rest. In those setups, overlap is easy and this check is cheap insurance.

If your campaign is purely manual — no auto-dialing at all — there's nothing in the queue to collide with, so the setting does nothing useful. And on a pure auto-dial campaign where agents never hand-dial, it's equally irrelevant. It's specifically the mixed case it was built for, which is also why blended dialing teams hear about it most.

How it fits with other duplicate guards

This is one of a few overlapping protections. The Hopper VLC Dup Check guards against the same contact entering the queue twice via vendor lead code. A load-time Duplicate check stops dupes before they ever reach the system. Manual Dial Hopper Check covers the specific seam between a human dialing and the machine dialing the same number — a gap the other two don't fully close.

Used together, those three cover most of the ways a number can sneak into your dialing twice. Manual Dial Hopper Check is the one that handles the live, in-the-moment collision between an agent and the dialer, which is the case the other two simply can't see coming.

Bottom line

If your agents ever hand-dial from a list the auto-dialer is also running, turn this on. The cost is essentially nothing and it spares you the bad look of double-calling a prospect. If they don't, leave it at the default and move on. For how manual and automatic dialing share the same queue, the VICIdial dialing strategies guide lays out the full flow. And if you'd rather run a blended center without hand-tuning every safeguard, our managed hosting comes set up sensibly — see our plans.

Frequently asked

What problem does Manual Dial Hopper Check solve?
It prevents a number from being called twice when an agent manually dials a lead that was also sitting in the auto-dial queue. With it on, the queued copy is deleted before the manual call goes out.
Is it on by default?
No. The default is N. It's most worth enabling on blended campaigns where agents place manual calls from the same lists the auto-dialer is working.
