List Order in VICIdial: how leads get picked

List Order decides which leads VICIdial pulls into the dialing queue first — by upload order, phone number, call count, timezone, and more. Pick the wrong one and your best leads sit untouched. Here's a plain-English tour of the options that matter.

List Order in VICIdial: how leads get picked

VICIdial doesn't dial your leads in random order by default — it follows the List Order setting on the campaign. This one dropdown decides which leads get pulled into the queue first, and that ordering quietly shapes who hears from you and when. Choose well and your freshest, most-likely-to-convert leads get worked first. Choose poorly and good leads sit at the back of the line all day.

What List Order controls

First, the dial statuses on your campaign decide which leads are even eligible — NEW, callbacks, no-answers, and so on. List Order then takes that eligible pool and sorts it, deciding the sequence in which leads flow into the Hopper. So it doesn't change which Lead records are callable — only the order they're picked.

The options worth knowing

There's a long menu, but most teams live in a handful of choices:

  • DOWN / UP: the simplest pair. DOWN dials the leads loaded into the list first; UP dials the most recently loaded first. Use UP when you want hot, just-uploaded leads worked immediately.
  • DOWN COUNT / UP COUNT: sort by how many times a lead has been called. DOWN COUNT starts with the least-called leads, spreading attempts evenly; UP COUNT goes after the most-called first.
  • UP / DOWN TIMEZONE: dial East-to-West or West-to-East. Handy for chasing the morning across time zones and staying inside calling hours.
  • RANDOM: grabs eligible leads in no particular order — useful when you want to avoid systematically front-loading one part of a list.
  • UP / DOWN RANK and UP / DOWN OWNER: order by a rank value or by lead owner, for teams that prioritize scored leads or assign accounts to specific reps.

There are also the "Nth NEW" count options — like DOWN COUNT 3rd NEW — which work least-called-first but slip a fresh NEW lead into every few picks. One catch: for those to behave, you must not have NEW selected in your dial statuses, or you'll double up.

Two helpers: Randomize and Secondary

List Order Randomize shuffles the leads once they're already in the hopper, off by default. On very large lists it can slow the loader, so leave it off unless you need the scramble. List Order Secondary is a tiebreaker: after your main sort runs, it re-arranges leads that came out "equal" by either lead ID or last call time — a small lever that mostly matters at scale.

Picking one

For most outbound work, DOWN COUNT is a sensible default — it treats leads fairly and avoids burning the same numbers. If freshness wins for you, UP. If you call nationwide, a TIMEZONE order keeps you well-timed and inside the hours you're allowed to call. Note that List Order is overridden if you enable List mix, which most teams should leave off. Frequently asked

What's the difference between UP and DOWN list order?
DOWN pulls the first leads loaded into the list first; UP pulls the most recently loaded leads first. They're the simplest options and just reflect upload order in opposite directions.
What does DOWN COUNT do?
DOWN COUNT starts with the leads that have been called the fewest times and works up toward the most-called. It's a fair way to give every lead a roughly even number of attempts before hammering the same ones.
