Campaign CID Name: setting your caller-ID name
Campaign CID Name sets the text label that can ride along with your number, like a business name. It only works through a CNAM-capable gateway. Here is what it does and what it does not.
Caller ID has two parts: the number and the name. Most VICIdial settings control the number. The Campaign CID Name field is the one that controls the name, the short text label like a business name that can appear above the number on someone's phone. It is a small field with a big catch, so it is worth understanding before you fill it in.
Name versus number
The caller-ID number is the digits people see and can call back. The caller-ID name is separate text that some phones show alongside it. In the phone world the name is handled by CNAM (caller ID name), and the related database carriers query is LIDB. Campaign CID Name is where you set the text you want sent for every outbound call on that campaign. It is blank by default, which means no name is sent.
The catch: it needs the right gateway
Here is the part people miss. Campaign CID Name only works if your system is set up to send a caller-ID name through a CNAM-capable gateway, the kind that knows how to pass that label out to the network. Filling in the field on a campaign that is not wired that way does nothing visible. The text gets stored, the calls go out, and the name simply never appears.
Even with the gateway in place, your Carrier and the recipient's network both have to honor the name. In many regions the receiving carrier looks up the name from its own database against your number rather than trusting what you send, so the displayed name can differ from what you typed. Treat this field as a request, not a guarantee.
What to actually do
If you want a name to show reliably, the work happens with your carrier, not just in this field. Register your business name against your numbers so the lookup returns the right label, and keep your number reputation clean so you do not get a Spam Likely label tag layered on top. The Campaign CID Name field is the VICIdial-side switch that complements that registration; on its own it is not enough.
If you only have one carrier setup and no CNAM gateway, do not spend time tuning this field. Focus on the number side, where CID Groups and area-code matching do more for your answer rate.
Keep the name short and recognizable, since most displays only show a dozen or so characters and anything longer gets cut off. Use a name a recipient would actually recognize, ideally the same business name tied to the DID (direct inward dialing) you call back from, so a curious lead who looks you up finds a match. A name that does not line up with the number can read as suspicious and works against you. And remember the modern reality: even a perfect name will not save a number that has already picked up a bad reputation, so the name and the number reputation have to be managed together.
Where it fits
Campaign CID Name rounds out the caller-ID picture, sitting beside all the number settings rather than competing with them. Frequently asked
- The CID Number is the phone number people see. The CID Name is the text label, like a business name, that can ride along with it. They are separate, and the name needs a gateway that supports sending it.
- Setting the field is only half the job. The name only appears if your system routes calls through a CNAM-capable gateway and your carrier passes the name through to the recipient's network.
