So why do people ask what VICIdial "costs"? Because the software being free is the smallest part of the bill. The real cost is in running it: the server, the setup, the security, the updates, and the hours it takes to keep a dialer healthy. This is the honest 2026 breakdown.

The software is free. Running it is not.

VICIdial is licensed under the AGPL — zero dollars, no per-seat fee, no annual license. Every "VICIdial price" you see quoted is really the price of hosting and managing it. There are two ways to pay that: do it yourself, or have someone manage it for you. The numbers below are what each path actually costs.

Option 1 — Self-host it yourself

You rent a bare server, install Ubuntu, compile Asterisk, install VICIdial, harden the box, configure your carrier, and maintain it forever. The server is cheap. Everything around it is not.

  • Ongoing sysadmin: security patches, Asterisk upgrades, disk and database maintenance, backups, and the 2 a.m. call when dialing stops. Budget a few hours a month minimum — more when something breaks.
  • The hidden cost — downtime: every hour your dialer is down, your agents are paid to sit idle. That line item never shows up on a server invoice, and it dwarfs all the others.

Self-hosting is the right call if you have a sysadmin who knows Asterisk and you want maximum control. For everyone else, the "free software" ends up being the most expensive way to run a dialer once you price in the time.

Option 2 — Managed VICIdial hosting

Someone else provisions, secures, and maintains the box; you log in and run campaigns. You trade a flat monthly fee for never touching a config file. The good managed hosts charge per server, not per agent — which matters more than almost anything else on this page.
