How much does VICIdial cost?

VICIdial software is free, but running it costs money. The total bill comes from three components: server hosting, carrier minutes, and labor — or a flat managed fee that replaces all three.

How much does VICIdial cost?

VICIdial is free, open-source software. The license costs nothing. What costs money is everything required to make it run: a server, Carrier minutes, and the labor to set it up and keep it healthy. Add those three together and you have the real number. This post gives you the shape of each component so you can estimate what your operation will spend.

For a deep breakdown of every cost line, see our full guide on what VICIdial really costs.

The three cost components

Every VICIdial deployment, whether self-hosted or managed, pays for the same three things in some form.

  • Server / hosting. VICIdial runs on Linux. You need a VPS or dedicated box sized to your Concurrent calls and agent count. A small server for around ten agents typically runs a few tens of dollars a month. A dedicated box sized for fifty to a hundred agents costs more.
  • Carrier minutes. VICIdial does not come with minutes. You bring your own SIP trunk and pay your carrier per minute dialed, often a fraction of a cent to a few cents per minute, plus any number rental fees for DID (direct inward dialing) numbers.
  • Labor. Installing VICIdial from source, securing it, wiring up your carrier, and patching the system over time takes real sysadmin hours. This is often the largest and least visible cost, especially for teams without dedicated Linux experience.

How the components add up

  A[Total VICIdial cost] --> B[Server hosting]
  A --> C[Carrier minutes]
  A --> D[Labor]
  B --> E[VPS or dedicated box]
  C --> F[Per-minute rates + DID rental]
  D --> G[Install + secure + maintain]

In a self-hosted setup, all three costs sit with you. Server hosting is predictable once you pick a plan with your cloud provider. Carrier minutes scale with call volume, so they vary month to month. Labor is the least predictable: a smooth setup might take a day; troubleshooting a SIP registration issue or a broken Asterisk upgrade can eat a week.

What managed hosting changes

Managed hosting collapses the server and labor lines into a single flat monthly fee. You still pay your carrier directly for minutes — that part never goes away because you own the calling relationship. But the install, the security hardening, the OS patching, and the uptime monitoring become the provider's problem.

Whether that trade is worth it depends on how much your team's time costs and how often you expect to need server-level work. A team with a sysadmin on staff who is already managing other Linux boxes may find self-hosting economical. A sales team without that staff will often spend more on labor, even at a low hourly rate, than a managed plan would cost.

If you already own a server, a BYOI (bring your own infrastructure) plan lets you get managed VICIdial on your existing box for a low flat fee — you keep paying your own compute bill, and the provider handles the install and management.

Rough ranges to start your estimate

Server costs for a small self-hosted deployment typically start in the range of a few tens of dollars a month and scale up as agent count and call volume grow. Carrier minute costs depend entirely on your call volume and your carrier's rate card. Labor is the hardest to estimate in advance, but even a modest amount of sysadmin time per month at professional rates adds up quickly.
