How to safely delete a VICIdial phone entry
Deleting a VICIdial phone is a deliberate two-step confirmation, and it only works with a user account that has delete permission.
Removing a phone entry sounds trivial, but a wrong delete can knock a real device offline mid-shift. VICIdial knows this, so it makes deletion deliberate: two clicks, a confirmation in between, and a permission check on your account. Here's how to do it without breaking anything.
When the option is enabled, the DELETE THIS PHONE link sits at the bottom of the phone modification page. Clicking it doesn't remove anything yet. The page reloads with a second confirmation link at the top, and only that second click removes the entry. It's a two-step process built to stop accidental deletes.
The two-step flow

A[Open phone modification page] --> B[Scroll to bottom]
B --> C[Click DELETE THIS PHONE]
C --> D[Page reloads with confirm link]
D --> E[Click second DELETE THIS PHONE]
E --> F[Phone entry removed]You must be logged into the VICIdial admin pages with a user account that has permission to delete phone entries. Without that permission the link won't do anything for you, even if you can see the page. This keeps phone removal in the hands of accounts you trust.
Before you delete
- Check that no Agent is currently logged in on that phone.
- Make sure no campaign or device still relies on the Extension.
- Confirm your account actually holds the delete permission.
If you only want to retire the device temporarily, consider leaving the entry in place rather than deleting it. An unused entry costs nothing and saves you re-creating it later, with the same login, password, and settings you'd otherwise have to rebuild from scratch.
The two-step design is there on purpose, so resist the urge to rush it. The first click is your intent and the second is your confirmation, with a full page reload in between to give you a beat to reconsider. If you clicked the first link and then realized you had the wrong phone open, simply don't click the second one — navigate away and nothing is removed. Deletion only commits on that final confirmation.
And because the action is gated on your user account's permissions, the cleanest way to keep accidental deletes rare is to grant that permission narrowly. Not every manager needs to be able to remove phones. Reserve it for the people who actually maintain the device fleet, and casual mistakes never get the chance to happen.
For how phone entries fit into the broader setup, see the phones and aliases guide. And if you need to bring a replacement online, how to add a new phone covers the other direction.
Managing the lifecycle of phones and their config is fiddly to do safely by hand. VICIfast handles the regeneration and permissions for you — see our pricing.
