Auto Pause Pre-Call Work explained

Auto Pause Pre-Call Work keeps the dialer from dropping a call on an agent who is mid-task — looking up a lead, checking callbacks, entering a pause code. It auto-pauses them so the next call never lands on a distracted agent.

Auto Pause Pre-Call Work explained

Here is a problem every busy floor hits: an agent dives into a lead lookup or checks their callbacks, and right then the predictive dialer connects a fresh call to them. Now they are talking to a customer while half their attention is somewhere else. Auto Pause Pre-Call Work is the campaign setting that prevents this, by quietly pausing the agent the moment they start a task that needs their full attention.

What it does

In auto-dial mode, when this setting is on, the agent is automatically set to paused as soon as they click into any function that requires them to be paused. That includes:

  • Manual Dial and Fast Dial
  • Lead Search
  • Call Log View
  • Callbacks Check
  • Enter Pause Code

The default is off. Without it, an agent who opens lead search is still in the pool, and the dialer can hand them a connected call mid-search. Turning it on closes that gap. The agent simply will not receive an auto-dialed call while they are heads-down in one of these tasks.

The auto-resume half

On its own, Auto Pause Pre-Call Work pauses the agent but leaves them paused. They have to un-pause themselves when they are done. That is where its partner setting comes in. Auto Resume Pre-Call Work, when enabled, flips the agent back to active automatically the moment they finish or cancel the task they opened. Turn both on together and the whole thing becomes invisible to the agent: they look something up, the dialer holds off, they finish, and calls start flowing again. No manual pause-and-resume dance.

Most teams run them as a pair. Pausing without resuming tends to leave agents accidentally idle, because people forget to click back to active, which hurts your Occupancy.

Labeling the pause

If you are also running Pause code tracking, there is a tidy third setting: Auto Pause Pre-Call Code. When pause codes are active and auto-pause fires, this is the code the agent gets stamped with, with a default of PRECAL. That way your reporting separates "paused for pre-call work" from "paused for lunch." Without it, this productive pause time would blur into your general break stats and quietly inflate them.

When to turn it on

If your campaign mixes auto-dial with a lot of agent-driven lookups, callbacks, or manual dialing, turn this on. It is most valuable on Blended dialing setups where agents constantly switch between modes. On a pure, fast Predictive dialing campaign where agents rarely touch those tools, it matters less, though it costs nothing to have on as a safety net.

This setting also indirectly protects your drop rate: an agent yanked into a call mid-task is more likely to fumble it, and a dialer connecting calls to distracted agents wastes connects. For the bigger picture on pacing, see our dialing strategies guide, and if drops are your main worry, our walkthrough on lowering your VICIdial drop rate pairs well with it.

All three of these are checkboxes on the campaign screen once your dialer is up. If you still need one, see our plans and have VICIdial running in under a minute.

Frequently asked

Does the agent get un-paused automatically afterward?
Only if Auto Resume Pre-Call Work is also enabled. That setting flips the agent back to active when they finish or cancel the task. Without it, they stay paused until they un-pause manually.
Which actions trigger the auto-pause?
Manual Dial, Fast Dial, Lead Search, Call Log View, Callbacks Check, and Enter Pause Code all set the agent to paused when this is on.
