Answering machine

AAAnswering machine (auto-detected)

Answering-machine detection decided a machine picked up, before any agent heard the call.

AA is what the dialer writes when its answering-machine detection concludes that a recording, not a person, answered. No agent was ever connected, which is the point: detection exists to keep machines off your agents.

When VICIdial sets it

Automatically, during the first seconds of an answered call, on campaigns that have answering-machine detection turned on. With detection off you will not see AA at all — those calls go to agents and come back as the agent-marked machine code instead.

What to do

  • Watch AA against the agent-marked code. Machines leaking through to agents means detection is too lenient; humans getting cut off means it is too aggressive.
  • Remember detection costs a couple of seconds of listening on every answered call. That silence is what customers describe as "nobody was there".
  • Recycle AA leads at a different hour rather than dropping them. The number answered, so somebody is behind it.

The agent-marked version is A. If the campaign plays a message to the machine instead of hanging up you get AM and then AL.
