VICIdial List Time Zone Setting Explained

The Time Zone Setting decides how VICIdial figures out what local time it is for each lead in a list. Here is what each option does.

Every lead in VICIdial has a time zone attached to it, and that time zone is what decides whether the system is allowed to dial the lead right now. Call a number too early in the morning or too late at night and you are breaking calling-hour rules. So the question of how VICIdial decides which time zone a lead belongs to is not a small detail. It is the foundation under your whole calling window.

The list-level Time Zone Setting controls the method VICIdial uses to look up that time zone for the leads inside one specific list. There are four methods, each with a different source of truth. Pick the wrong one for your data and leads end up coded to the wrong zone, which means they get dialed at the wrong hour or not at all.

The four lookup methods

COUNTRY_AND_AREA_CODE is the default. It uses the country code and the area code of the phone number to figure out the zone. For most North American calling this is the sensible choice and it needs no extra data loaded.

POSTAL_CODE uses the lead's postal code when one is present. This is more accurate than area code for the USA, because a phone number's area code no longer reliably tells you where a person physically lives once cell phones move around.

NANPA_PREFIX works only in the USA and uses both the area code and the three-digit prefix of the phone number. It is more precise than area code alone, but it is not enabled by default and needs the NANPA prefix data loaded onto the system first. Selecting it without that data will not help you.

OWNER_TIME_ZONE_CODE reads a standard time zone abbreviation that you have loaded into the owner field of each lead, for example EST, CST, MST, or PST. Use this when you already know each lead's zone from your source data and want to trust it directly.

Why your change is not immediate

This is the part that surprises people. The time zone lookup runs at night, not the moment you save the list. So if you switch the method this afternoon and expect the leads to recode right away, they will not. The recode happens during the overnight maintenance pass.

Changing the Time Zone Setting does nothing until the nightly process runs. Do not test it five minutes later, decide it is broken, and start re-uploading leads. Give it a night.

Setting on the list versus on load

There are two places time zone gets decided. One is here, on the list, which governs the ongoing nightly recoding. The other is at the moment you import leads, where the lead loader does an initial encoding using the phone code, phone number, and state. The time zone the system lands on translates into a GMT offset (lead) stored on each lead, and that offset is what gets checked against your campaign's Call times before any number is dialed. That check is how VICIdial keeps you inside Permitted calling hours. State-level rules also matter: those are driven by the lead's state field, not only the time zone. So a lead can be inside its local calling window by clock but still blocked by a stricter state rule.

If your leads are USA and you have good postal codes, POSTAL_CODE usually beats the area-code default for accuracy. Cell-phone area codes drift; zip codes mostly do not.
