What the audio chooser link does

The audio chooser link in VICIdial is the little picker beside every prompt field. It lists Audio Store files, lets you sort and preview them, and fills the field in one click.

What the audio chooser link does

Across the VICIdial admin there are small links that read "audio chooser" sitting right next to prompt fields. People ignore them and type filenames by hand, which is how you end up with a typo'd prompt that plays nothing. The audio chooser is the picker that fixes that. It reads from the Audio Store, the central library where all your prompts live, and lets you select one without guessing the exact name.

Where you see it

Any field that expects an audio prompt has the link beside it. That includes the Call menu prompt, the Ingroup welcome and hold prompts, the Music on hold entries, and the Answering Machine Message field on an outbound Campaign. Same widget everywhere, so once you know it, you know it for the whole system.

What it actually does

Click the link and a window pops up listing every file in the Audio Store. From there you can:

  • Sort the list by filename, file size, or age. By default the newest uploads sit at the top, which is exactly what you want right after adding a prompt.
  • Play each prompt straight from the browser so you can hear it before you commit. No more attaching the wrong file and finding out on a live call.
  • Click a prompt to drop it into the field you opened the chooser from. The field fills with the correct name and you submit the page as normal.

It is the same library that the Audio Store page manages. If you have not set that up, start with how to set up the VICIdial Audio Store, and for a plain explanation of the library itself read what the VICIdial Audio Store is.

How the click flows through

flowchart LR
  A[Prompt field] --> B[Click audio chooser]
  B --> C[Reads Audio Store]
  C --> D[List sorted newest first]
  D --> E[Preview a prompt]
  E --> F{Right one}
  F -->|No| D
  F -->|Yes| G[Click to select]
  G --> H[Field filled]
  H --> I[Submit the page]

Nothing in the chooser changes the file. It does not convert, re-encode, or move anything. It only reads what is already in the store and writes the chosen name into the field. That distinction matters: if a prompt sounds wrong, the fix is in the file you uploaded, not in the chooser. Check the Recording format (WAV/MP3) of the source file rather than re-picking it.

If a prompt you just uploaded is not in the chooser yet, it is almost always the copy window, not a bug. New files take about two minutes to propagate before the chooser sees them.

Why use it over typing

You can type a prompt filename directly into most of these fields, and old hands often do. But the chooser removes two whole classes of mistakes: a misspelled name that silently plays nothing, and picking a file that turns out to be the wrong recording. Being able to preview before you attach is worth the extra click, especially on an IVR (interactive voice response) where a wrong prompt sends callers down the wrong path. The broader story of how prompts, the store, and playback connect is in the audio prompts, voicemail, and TTS guide.

The audio chooser is a small thing that saves you from a few annoying mistakes. VICIfast ships a dialer with the Audio Store and chooser ready to go on day one, so your prompts are pickable as soon as you upload them. Check our pricing to get a configured box.
