How to assign a phone to a server with Server IP
The Server IP menu on a VICIdial phone entry decides which dialer the phone lives on. Here is how to set it and why it matters.
Every phone entry in VICIdial belongs to one server. The Server IP menu is the field that picks which one. If you run a single dialer that choice is obvious, but the moment you have more than one box it becomes the setting that decides where the phone account gets created and where the agent ends up logging in. Get it wrong and the phone simply will not register, because the account was built on a server the device never talks to.
What the Server IP menu does
Server IP is a dropdown, not a free-text box. It lists the dialers that already exist in your system, and you select one. When you save a SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) or IAX2 phone, VICIdial generates the matching Asterisk account on that specific server, usually within a minute of submitting the form. The whole point of the field is to tell the system which machine should hold the credentials your softphone will register against.
Because the account is created on the chosen box, the IP address in this menu is the same address your device points at when it registers. A phone assigned to one server and pointed at another has no account waiting for it.
It also pays to remember that this menu only shows servers the system already knows about. If the dialer you want is not listed, it has not been added yet, and that is a setup step on its own rather than something you fix from the phone form. On a single-server install you will see one entry and there is nothing to decide. On a larger install with a few dialers, the menu is the one place where you steer an agent to the box you intend, so it is worth a second look every time you create or copy a phone. Treat it as the home address for the phone account, because everything else on the form depends on the account landing on the right machine.
Setting it step by step
- Open the phone under Admin then Phones, or start from Add A New Phone.
- Find the Server IP menu and pick the dialer the agent will use.
- Confirm the extension, dialplan number, login, Registration Password and protocol are all filled in.
- Save the form and wait about a minute for the account to be written.
- Point your device at that same server address and register.

An EXTERNAL protocol phone still needs a Server IP, because that tells the system which dialer's Dialplan handles the outbound call, even though no real account gets created. If you are running a web-based phone, there is a separate Use External Server IP option you can set to Y so the browser registers to the server's external address rather than the internal one. That is handy when the agent sits outside the network and the internal IP is not reachable.
A common mistake is to clone a phone from one dialer to another and forget to repoint the Server IP. The copy keeps the old server, the new device registers nowhere useful, and the Extension sits unused. Whenever you move a phone, check this menu first. For more on the surrounding fields, see the phones pillar guide, and if you are picking a protocol at the same time, the Client Protocol walkthrough pairs well with this one.
Hosted VICIdial keeps this simple because there is one server per account, so the menu has a single obvious choice and your phones always land in the right place. See VICIfast pricing if you would rather skip multi-server juggling and have a dialer running in under 40 seconds.
