How to connect a Yealink deskphone to VICIdial

How to connect a Yealink deskphone to VICIdial

A Yealink is a Hardphone (deskphone), a physical desk handset that talks over IP rather than a softphone running on a computer. Agents who sit at a fixed desk often prefer one. Connecting it to VICIdial is the same idea as any other device: build the phone entry, then enter three values on the Yealink. Here is how.

Build the VICIdial phone entry

In the admin pages, add a new phone with a protocol of SIP or PJSIP. A SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) phone gets its Asterisk account written automatically within about a minute of saving, so the account is live before you touch the handset. Note the three values you will need: the Server IP, the phone Extension, and the Registration Password.

Most Yealink phones are configured through a web interface in a browser. You point your browser at the handset's own IP address, log in, and open the account or SIP account settings. There you fill in:

  • SIP Server / Server Host — the Server IP of the VICIdial server.
  • Register Name and User Name — the phone extension, for example test101.
  • Password — the Registration Password from the phone record, not the Login Password. The Login Password is only for the web agent screen.

The Registration Password is the secret stored in the auto-generated config for that phone. Its default is the word test, which you should replace with something at least eight characters using upper and lower case letters and a number before the handset goes live. Leaving it as test on a phone that faces the open internet is an open door, so treat changing it as part of setup rather than an optional step.

One more detail worth knowing on a deskphone: the user name you enter is the same plain extension the server already recognizes, with no protocol prefix. Yealink phones often have separate boxes for Register Name and User Name, and on a standard VICIdial setup you put the extension in both. That keeps the device asking for exactly the account VICIdial built for it.

Save and watch the line register

Enable the account, save, and the Yealink will try to register. A registered line usually shows a solid account indicator or a line key with the extension on the screen. Exact menu labels vary by Yealink model and firmware, so trust the on-screen names over any fixed path. If the handset and the VICIdial server sit on different networks, you may also need your network admin to allow SIP traffic through, but the three values themselves do not change.

If the line stays unregistered
