What the installer does on Ubuntu 22.04

The parts of a VICIdial scratch install that are particular to Ubuntu 22.04, and that a by-hand install has to get right.

  • Ubuntu 22.04 ships PHP 8.1, so PHP 8.3 comes from the ondrej/php PPA, the same maintainer who packages PHP for Debian, with security fixes backported.
  • MariaDB is Ubuntu 22.04’s own 10.6, sized to the server’s memory and cores.
  • AppArmor is removed, as VICIdial’s own Ubuntu instructions do: its daemons, AGIs and web code write across /etc/asterisk, /var/lib/asterisk and /var/spool/asterisk, and a confining profile breaks them.

FAQ

Questions, answered straight

Yes. The installer puts stock VICIdial r4035 on Ubuntu 22.04 with PHP 8.3 from the ondrej/php PPA, Ubuntu’s MariaDB 10.6 and Asterisk 22.5.1-vf1 built for 22.04. With --php 7.4 it installs PHP 7.4 and VICIdial r4032 instead.

Yes: add --php 7.4 and the installer uses PHP 7.4 from the same PPA with VICIdial r4032, the revision written for it. PHP 7.4 no longer gets fixes from PHP itself, so 8.3 is the default.

4m 15s from the start of the install to a working dialer, measured on a fresh 4 vCPU / 8 GB server with every option on and the prebuilt Asterisk. Compiling Asterisk on the server instead adds up to 3 minutes.

Run the same command again. It resumes at the stage that failed and keeps the passwords and options it already chose.
