What the installer does on AlmaLinux 9

The parts of a VICIdial scratch install that are particular to AlmaLinux 9, and that a by-hand install has to get right.

  • EPEL is added for screen (VICIdial runs every daemon inside it), certbot, lame, mpg123 and most of the Perl modules, and CodeReady Builder (CRB) for the headers they need.
  • PHP 8.3 and MariaDB 10.11 come from AppStream’s module streams, so nothing outside the distribution and EPEL is needed.
  • SELinux goes to permissive, which still logs what it would have blocked: VICIdial ships no SELinux policy.
  • The kernel update is held back during the install and installed in the background afterwards, so the install never waits on it. It takes effect at the next reboot.

FAQ

Questions, answered straight

Yes. The installer puts stock VICIdial r4035 on AlmaLinux 9 with PHP 8.3 and MariaDB 10.11 from AppStream, EPEL and CRB enabled, Apache with PHP-FPM, firewalld, and Asterisk 22.5.1-vf1 built for the el9 systems.

It makes no difference to VICIdial: both rebuild RHEL 9, and the installer does the same on each. Both are tested on every release.

4m 03s from the start of the install to a working dialer, measured on a fresh 4 vCPU / 8 GB server with every option on and the prebuilt Asterisk. Compiling Asterisk on the server instead adds up to 3 minutes.

Run the same command again. It resumes at the stage that failed and keeps the passwords and options it already chose.
