Power dialing
A dial method that places a fixed number of calls per available agent automatically, dialing faster than preview but without predictive forecasting.
Power dialing is a Dial method where the system automatically places a fixed number of calls for each available agent. As soon as an agent is free, the dialer fires off calls at the rate you set and connects the agent to the first live answer. It is faster than Preview dialing because the agent never has to trigger the call themselves and never pauses to read the lead first. The machine drives the pace, and the agent just talks.
In VICIdial this is closely tied to Ratio dialing and the Dial level setting. A power-dialing campaign at a dial level of 3.0 places three calls per agent. The pace is fixed, so it is easy to reason about: you know roughly how many calls go out and how the load on your trunks and agents will look at any moment. That predictability is a big part of why managers who like a hands-on feel reach for it.
Where it sits on the spectrum
Power dialing is a step up in speed from Progressive dialing, which usually dials just one call per agent, and a step below Predictive dialing, which forecasts how many calls to place based on statistics rather than a fixed ratio. Because power dialing uses a fixed ratio, it can produce more dropped calls than predictive when the ratio is set too high for the moment — the math does not adapt when the answer rate suddenly climbs. So keep an eye on your Drop rate and dial the ratio back if it creeps up.
Reach for power dialing when you want more speed than preview but prefer a simple, predictable pace over a forecasting algorithm you have to trust. It works well for mid-size campaigns and for managers who like to set the ratio by hand and adjust it as they watch the results roll in. If you want the system to do the tuning for you instead, that is where the adaptive and predictive methods take over. Many teams begin with power dialing to learn how a list behaves, then graduate to predictive once the volume justifies it.
Related terms
Dial level
The number of calls VICIdial places for each available agent — the main dial controls how hard the dialer pushes ahead of your team.
Dial method
The setting on a VICIdial campaign that decides how the system places calls, from manual one-at-a-time dialing to fully automatic adaptive pacing.
Predictive dialing
A dialing mode where VICIdial places more calls than there are free agents, predicting how many will connect, to keep agents busy.
Preview dialing
A dial method where the agent sees the lead's details on screen first and then decides when to place the call, giving full control and no dropped calls.
Progressive dialing
A dial method that automatically places one call per available agent, dialing the moment an agent frees up but never overshooting the agent count.
Ratio dialing
A dialing mode that places a fixed number of calls for each available agent, set by a dial level you choose, instead of predicting demand.
