Call park

Call park puts a live caller on hold in a numbered slot so any agent can pick the call back up from another phone, instead of a transfer tied to one person.

Call park is a way to put a live caller on hold in a numbered slot so someone else, or you on a different phone, can pick them up. Imagine setting a phone call down on a shelf with a ticket number. You can walk to another desk, dial that number, and grab the same call. That is call park in a nutshell, and it is older than VICIdial itself, borrowed from traditional office phone systems where it has been a staple for decades.

The difference between call park and a normal transfer matters. A Warm transfer sends the caller to one specific person or Extension that you choose up front. Call park instead sends the caller to a shared slot that anyone can retrieve. This is handy in a busy room: you park a caller, announce "call on slot 71," and whoever is free picks it up. While parked, the caller usually hears Music on hold so the silence is not awkward and they know they have not been disconnected.

How it works underneath

Under the hood, Asterisk holds the caller's Channel in a special parking lot with a timeout attached. If nobody retrieves the call within that window, the system rings back the person who parked it so the caller is not forgotten on the shelf forever. Park slots are reusable: the moment a parked call is picked up or returns, that slot number is free again for the next caller. The whole feature is built on the same bridging machinery that joins any two call legs together.

In a hard-dialing VICIdial outbound shop, call park comes up less than in a traditional office, because the dialer drives the flow and decides who talks to whom. But it is a useful tool for inbound teams and for the occasional moment when an agent needs to hand a caller off without picking a specific person, much like setting up a quick Three-way call but without the third party staying on the line afterward.
